I wrote this back in 2013. It’s about capital punishment which I’m mostly against. But your opinion may vary.
Go to hell.
Burn in hell.
See you in hell.
Our opinion of hell ranges from eternal suffering by fire and brimstone to a shitty afternoon at the DMV. There really isn’t an observable hell much like there isn’t an observable heaven. These ultimate reward punishment concepts spring from our individual beliefs. If one subscribes to the theory that hell exists and evil people go there when they die, then it follows that as a punishment for a heinous unspeakable crime, death is the means to which transport that person to hell. Although if one doesn’t subscribe to the theory that hell exists (or heaven for that matter) then death is merely justice for committing a terrible crime.
But what is justice without punishment? If death is the end then what is gained? In the literal sense, an evil has been eliminated for committing a crime. But isn’t an observable punishment concrete evidence of justice served? Isn’t watching them grow old inside a cell proof of suffering?
To see their loved ones through bars, unable to touch family and friends. Unable to see them live, to say goodbye when they die. To have their memory of you be an aging prisoner growing older and older within the same four walls every day while the rest of the world goes on without you. The fact of knowing there are new and amazing things going on in the world while you sit in the same spot day after day after day.
But that doesn’t matter you say, the evil person is dead and they don’t exist. And I say you’re right because they are dead until you think about it from their point of view. There is none because they have ceased to exist.
Don’t you want to see the punishment you wish upon them? An eye for an eye is merely a punishment, prison is hell.
